FinishedbyJesusFrancoandPatxiIrigoyenin1992.(OrsonWellesdiedin1985).　　Inthe1950s,OrsonWellesshotsomescenesfeaturinghimselfas"OrsonWelles,thefilmdirector"andthenlittlegirl'PatriciaMcCormack'asachildnamed"Dulcie"(afterDulcinea),whichwillbeintroducedbyWellesintheworldofDonQuixote.Thesescenesaren'tpresentinthisJesusFrancoversion.　　AccordingtoSpanishfilmcriticJuanCobos,whohadwatchedanearlyroughcutofthemoviewhileOrsonWelleswasstillfilmingmaterialforit,thisnewversioncutandreshapedbyJesusFrancodoesn'tresembleWelles'visionatall.　　Thefilmdoesn'tincludeallknownfootageofDonQuixote.ThereisfootagebeingprivatelyheldinatleasttwocollectionsinEurope.　　Intheunfinisheddoc,FilmingtheTrial,OrsonWellessaidthatifDonQuixotewaseverfinished,hewouldhavecalledit"WhenareyougoingtofinishDonQuixote?"　　UnlikeotherunfinishedOrsonWellesfilms,DonQuixote'sincompletestatewasnotbecauseoflackoffinances.WellesalwaysconsideredhisDonQuixotea"privateexercise".Orasheputit,heworkedonitlikeanauthorworksonanovel;undernoobligations,notimeconstraints,andcouldfinishitwheneverhefeelslikeit.　　OrsonWellesbeganfilmingthispicturein1955andworkedonitoffandonovertheyears.
